About

Sacred Heart Catholic School is committed to helping students with special learning needs. We provide instructional services to accommodate students’ individual needs for enrichment and remediation within the classroom. The needs of individual students are determined through testing by the special services department at Muenster ISD. Based on the recommendations of the diagnostician, accommodations and/or modifications are agreed upon and tailored to meet the needs of individual students.

Students with learning disabilities or difficulties, those with physical impairments, or behavioral, attention or emotional challenges are diagnosed through the educational services department at Muenster ISD. Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are developed and shared with their instructors, who then implement the appropriate accommodations and/or modifications in their plans and classrooms. We also have a dedicated special resources instructor for elementary students and offer the Scottish Rite Take Flight and BUILD programs for students who are at risk or diagnosed with developmental dyslexia.

Sr. Jeanette Bayer serves as our dedicated special resources instructor for elementary students. We also offer the Scottish Rite Take Flight and BUILD programs for students who are at risk or diagnosed with developmental dyslexia. The Take Flight and BUILD programs are taught by our certified dyslexia specialist Michelle Knauf.

Take Flight Dyslexia Program & Build Early Reading Intervention

Sacred Heart offers students with developmental dyslexia the ability to unlock their potential for literary success through Take Flight, a program developed by Texas Scottish Rite for Children. Grounded in evidence-based practices and personalized instruction, Take Flight equips students with the tools and strategies needed to overcome challenges associated with dyslexia and become confident, proficient readers. Through multisensory instruction, phonics-based interventions and structured literacy approaches, students develop essential reading skills and strategies. The goal is to help dyslexic students seven years and older with word recognition, reading fluency, reading comprehension and to aid in the transition from a therapy setting to “real world” learning.

Texas Scottish Rite for Children research indicates students who complete Take Flight instruction show significant growth in all areas of reading skill. Additionally, follow-up research with children who completed the course indicates that students maintain the benefits of instruction on word reading skills and continue to improve in reading comprehension.

Take Flight contains the five components of effective reading instruction supported by the National Reading Panel research meta-analysis and mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency and Reading Comprehension.

Sacred Heart also offers BUILD, a K-1 early reading intervention program designed by Scottish Rite, to meet the needs of students who have been identified as at risk for dyslexia. BUILD provides small group intervention for children ages 5 and 6 years old who are struggling in reading. The program includes 100 lessons addressing the five components of alphabetic identification/sequencing, letter/sound knowledge, phonological awareness, vocabulary and comprehension. These key components are taught developmentally using a direct, systematic and multisensory method of introduction.

As a primary elementary instructor at Sacred Heart for over 35 years, Mrs. Michele Knauf underwent extensive training in order to transition into the role of a certified Take Flight and BUILD instructor for Sacred Heart elementary students.
